Phase One: Survey

Phase one of this project is an anonymous survey. The survey has been developed by a trained actor in discussion with other industry professionals. It aims to get a comprehensive picture of actors’ mental health experiences. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Things you need to know about the survey

1 It is anonymous, meaning even the researcher won’t know who has submitted the answers. Software is set so it does not capture things like IP addresses that could potentially be used for identification purposes.

2. Because we know actors work in a very visible profession where information can be crossed checked to identify people additional measures to protect anonymity have been put in place.

3. If you’re not sure you can get the whole thing done in one sitting, or if you need a break from the subject matter, you can come back to the survey later. If you forget anything you have written will be automatically submitted after a week.

4. Anonymous quotes from the survey will be used in publications and other related materials. Additional checks to protect anonymity will be carried out before anything is published.

For the purpose of phase one we are using a very specific definition of a professional actor currently working in the UK (see below). We acknowledge that this definition is subjective and we know that it does not encompass the full breadth of professional life. We are using it to help us really focus in on a group of people doing a particular kind of work in a particular geographical region in order to get clarity in the results.

For the purposes of phase one of this research a professional actor currently working in the UK is defined as:

A professional actor currently working in the UK is a person who is paid for presenting a narrative to an audience by embodying the persona of one or more person/being/character, where the primary mode of communication with the audience is language and/or actions as opposed to song, dance or stylised movement. They have performed this work in the UK for a UK based company within the last 18 months on stage, screen, and/or radio.

Interviews will be taking place from August 2023
